CURRENT SCHEDULE OF TRAINING WORKSHOPS
PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT FOR EDUCATORS
Three categories -
- Enhancement for classroom
teachers and administrators to address key issues which interfere
with academic success;
- Developing creative competencies to take
traditional teaching techniques to another level; and
- Workshops
that are targeted to specific groups of educational personnel besides
classroom teachers.
Category 1 for Teachers and Administrators
The workshops in the first category provide
skill enhancement for classroom teachers and administrators to effectively
address key issues that sabotage cultures of learning and thus interfere
with academic success. Participants learn how to create supportive and engaging learning environments
within their classrooms.
Adultism:
Barrier to Student Engagement
Many adults share common assumptions or stereotypes about youth.
Participants will explore the origination of these assumptions and
how they affect relationships with young people. They will learn
about conscious and unconscious biases about youth, the behaviors
that result from those biases, and alternative caring behaviors
to adultism.
Classroom
Management…The Things They Never Told You In College
Many teachers feel that the everyday classroom issues get in the
way of what they really signed up to do. When they go to college
no one ever tells them that the hardest part of teaching won’t
be the lesson plans, but the classroom management. This workshop
shows teachers how to better manage the classroom, freeing them
up to do what they really wanted to do…teach!
Conflict
Mediation
Conflict is a normal part of our human experience, and although
viewed by most people as negative and uncomfortable, it provides
an opportunity for growth and positive change. Mastering a step
by step process in dealing with conflict can be useful in solving
interpersonal problems, whether our own, or those between other
people. This highly experiential workshop will help participants
examine their own reactions to conflict, guide them in enhancing
the skills it takes to deal effectively with it, and allows for
the practice of a step by step process in conflict mediation.
Creating
Caring Classrooms
Imagine a classroom that is safe, supportive and nurturing. Participants
will discover techniques that foster a classroom experience that
respects each person’s uniqueness and also builds an environment
conducive to learning. When caring relationships are present, learning
is fun and productive – no matter what the Standard of Learning!
Cultural
Competence in the Classroom
Educators want to model culturally competent behaviors in the classroom.
This workshop will increase participants’ understanding of
the barriers to and indicators of a culturally competent classroom.
They will learn how cultural competence impacts the caring classroom
environment and the competence of students as well.
Do
You Hear What I Hear?
Many adults feel like young people don’t hear them. Sometimes
the young people sound like they are speaking a foreign language.
Participants in this workshop will explore some tried and true communication
techniques vital to any situation that will improve chances of hearing
and being heard.
MBTI
– Type Dynamics
The MBTI provides a useful method for understanding people by looking
at 16 personality preferences that everyone uses at different times.
Personality preferences influence behavior, especially when under
stress. This workshop will help participants integrate the theory
of type dynamics into both personal and professional lives - thereby
reducing stress and conflict.
When
Generations Collide: An Intergenerational Dialogue
Schools, just like any workplace, have four generations represented.
Emerging research shows that each generation brings a different
perspective and style to their work. Secondary school educators
can especially benefit from this research. Join Traditionalists
(born 1900-1945), Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), Generation Xers
(born 1965-1980), and Millennials (born 1981-1999) for a dynamic
exchange of information and ideas.

in tapping into the source of their creative energy that can lead
to innovations in meeting the challenges of today’s classroom
setting.
Awaken
Your Creative Spirit
It is the unique task of every teacher to nurture the creative gifts
inherent in every young person. Discovering personal creativity
is another matter entirely. Cultivating one’s own creativity
can result in personal insights and renewed professional energy.
Through a highly experiential workshop with a variety of fun, interactive,
expressive and creative media, participants will explore and discover
their own creative potential, resulting in promoting the creativity
of their students.
MONART
(overview of all MONART classes)
The MONART method is an internationally licensed technique teaching
drawing based on the international bestsellers by author and educator
Mona Brookes. Drawing is a teachable skill at which everyone can
be successful. The Monart system of drawing shows how to perceive
the visual world in terms of five basic elements of shape. Just
as a musician learns notes and scales in order to play an instrument,
Monart students learn the skills necessary to translate their perceptions
onto paper. Since 1979, Monart has been taught around the world
through Mona Brookes’ best-selling books, through Monart Schools,
and through incorporation into many school districts. In a noncompetitive,
peaceful environment, students learn that drawing is a teachable
subject in which everyone can be successful, that there is no right
or wrong and there are no mistakes in Art. This method has achieved
phenomenal results among both children and adults, including those
with learning difficulties. Monart has become a very powerful teaching
tool, since students are motivated and automatically learn while
they are having fun. Public school teachers who use the Monart method
in their classrooms report that reading and math levels rise, thus
closing the achievement gap. If a student draws what they are learning,
they will learn it eight times faster and retain it eight times
longer.
Essential
MONART Class
This class introduces Monart basics and challenges participants
to expand their knowledge through a variety of drawing projects.
An emphasis is placed on participants gaining confidence and learning
to draw independently using a variety of art materials.
Mixed
Media MONART
Starting with the MONART basics, participants are encouraged to
develop their own creative drawing approach. Projects are geared
to develop the participant’s drawing skills and familiarity
with a broader range of drawing mediums than in the Essential MONART
class.
MONART
– Draw and Learn
This is the MONART class that teaches how to incorporate MONART
drawing methods into classroom curricula. Leading educators recognize
Monart as a way students can learn skills such as focus and concentration;
decision making; problem solving; sequencing; and eye-hand coordination.
During this workshop participants will be introduced to the Monart
philosophy and methodology, increase knowledge of classroom management
using the Monart method, use the 5 basic elements of shape in guided
drawing experiences, understand age appropriate drawing lessons
for the classroom, and understand the essential components of a
Monart Drawing environment. MONART is a valuable teaching tool since
students are motivated and automatically learn while they are having
fun.
