Youth
Serving Agency Wins Prestigious National Award
Alternatives, Inc. Selected by Youth Service America
HAMPTON
- Youth Service America will present Alternatives, Inc, with the
2005 Harris Wofford Award, named in honor of the founder of the
Peace Corps and former U.S. Senator, from Pennsylvania.
Underwritten by the State Farm Companies Foundation, Youth Service
America created the Harris Wofford Awards as a recognition program
to honor the life work of former Sen. Wofford in making service
and service-learning the common expectation and common experience
of every young person in America.
Alternatives,
Inc, a Hampton based youth development agency www.altinc.org was
selected from a field of national nominees and cited for it leading
edge work with young people in the areas of service and service
learning. Alternatives was noted for the partnerships it has forged
with civic and private organizations, “ in order to promote
a strong youth service movement that will create healthy communities
and foster citizenship, knowledge, and the personal development
of young people.”
Setting an example
through his work in the civil rights movement, helping to launch
the Peace Corps, and making AmeriCorps a permanent part of the domestic
landscape, Wofford is a pioneer of the modern service movement in
the United States. The former senator, currently the co-chair of
America's Promise, is a board member of Youth Service America www.YSA.org.
and the Points of Light Foundation.
Award
Finalists will be honored and presented with a commemorative award
of recognition at the 15th Annual National Service-Learning Conference,
March 17-19, 2005 in Long Beach, California during the State Farm
Companies Foundation Awards Luncheon.
