Drug Prevention Program to launch for Special Needs Youth
Rivermont Life Skills Project teams up Alternatives with Centra
Health
HAMPTON
- The Governor’s office for Substance Abuse and Prevention
(GOSAP) has awarded Alternatives, a Hampton based youth development
organization, funds to deliver two life skills prevention programs
aimed at detering tobacco and other drug use among middle and high
school students at Centra Health’s Rivermont school for students
with special needs.
Rivermont school
provides special education programs for children and youth in both
Hampton and Newport News. The two research based prevention programs,
Project Toward No Drug Use (TND) and Project Toward No Tobacco Use
(TNT) are proven to deter substance use and violent behavior. Both
are designated as model programs by the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services.
Alternatives
will implement “Project TNT” with middle school students
and “Project TND” with high school students beginning
in the Fall of 2005. To sustain project activities Alternative’s
will train teachers in both curricula.
