Rivermont Life Skills Project teams up Alternatives with Centra Health

HAMPTON - The Governor’s office for Substance Abuse and Prevention (GOSAP) has awarded Alternatives, a Hampton based youth development organization, funds to deliver two life skills prevention programs aimed at detering tobacco and other drug use among middle and high school students at Centra Health’s Rivermont school for students with special needs.

Rivermont school provides special education programs for children and youth in both Hampton and Newport News. The two research based prevention programs, Project Toward No Drug Use (TND) and Project Toward No Tobacco Use (TNT) are proven to deter substance use and violent behavior. Both are designated as model programs by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Alternatives will implement “Project TNT” with middle school students and “Project TND” with high school students beginning in the Fall of 2005. To sustain project activities Alternative’s will train teachers in both curricula.
