Local
Youth Program Wins Babcock Foundation Award
Youth-led Coalition to combat negative stereotypes of youth
HAMPTON
- The Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation in Winston-Salem ,NC has
awarded local youth development agency Alternatives. (www.altinc.org)
$29,998 as part of the Foundation’s Community Problem Solving
Program. The Hampton-based organization will use the funds to create
a youth-led Coalition consisting of representatives from all of
Hampton’s Youth Civic Engagement leadership groups. Money
will go toward recruiting youth and adult partners on the Coalition,
training youth in leadership abilities to effect change, and strengthen
the organizational ability of the Coalition. Young people in Uth
Act, an Alternatives’ youth coalition, proposed the idea of
a community wide Coalition and have chosen to first tackle the issue
of discrimination against youth where it is found in the schools
and community.
Alternatives
is a private, non-profit youth development agency founded in 1973.
It is recognized nationally as a premiere youth development organization
and works in partnership with the Hampton Coalition for Youth. Hampton’s
Youth Civic Engagement Initiative is the recent recipient of the
Innovations in American Government Award from the Ash Institute
for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard University.
Alternatives’ contribution in this Initiative was recognized
earlier this year by Youth Service America when it was awarded the
Harris Wofford Award for commitment to youth service and civic involvement.
