Hampton, VA- February 19, 2009 – The State Farm Youth Advisory Board announced that Alternatives, Inc., in partnership with the Hampton Coalition for Youth, the Hampton Teen Center Youth Advisory Board and Old Point National Bank, will receive a service-learning grant in the amount of $53,640 for a financial literacy project.

Alternatives Inc. is one of 68 organizations to receive a service-learning, youth-led grant across the United States and Canada. More than 300 grant requests were received by the Board.

The Hampton Teen Center Advisory Board, comprised of 40 students, will engage in a direct service learning project that addresses the root causes of financial illiteracy by reaching 2,500 youth through peer
education, youth media, and social entrepreneurship for the community.

Alternatives, Inc., a nonprofit leader in innovative youth development and youth civic engagement, will engage high school students as peer educators to celebrate Teach Them to Save Day in April of 2009. In addition, staff from Alternatives will assist students to form a youth-run business which will be operated in the soon to be opened Hampton Teen Center. Members of WORD! - a youth-run social activism magazine - will produce an edition focusing on the importance of financial literacy for young people. Old Point National Bank will provide financial education resources and training for youth involved in the project.

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board is a diverse group of 30 youth, ages 17-20, who were chosen through a competitive process to lead and oversee this $5 million/year signature service-learning initiative.  The Youth Board identified the issues, issued competitive grants and will now provide technical assistance, communication and oversight to site grantees. The grants funded student-led service-learning projects in the United States and in the Alberta, New Brunswick and Ontario provinces of Canada.

“State Farm supports service-learning because it combines service to the community with classroom curriculum in a hands-on approach to mastering subject material while fostering civic responsibility,” said State Farm Agent and Vice-Mayor of Hampton, Joe Spencer.  “The State Farm Youth Advisory Board is a prime example of State Farm’s commitment to education, our community and our youth.”

State Farm will be presenting the grant on Monday, February 23, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. at One Franklin Street in Hampton.
